Lemon Tea Cake with Mixed Berries

Lemon Tea Cake with Mixed Berries

"Velvety moist" as the recipe is described...this cake is not. In fact, it's not even terribly sweet, and the lemon flavor is very subtle. Maybe I was expecting more sweet-tart, lemony, sugary pound cake goodness from this recipe...but it's more like a dense, lemon bread. All those complaints aside, the flavor isn't bad. The texture is slightly bread-y, not light and fluffy like an actual cake. Then again, maybe it's because this is a tea cake and is not meant to be enjoyed as a true dessert. Although I didn't really make the "topping" part of the recipe (mixed berries and vanilla yogurt), I can see why it's included to add some extra sweetness. Otherwise, you've got something pretty plain and "bland" (as a coworker called it)...and far from what I was expecting. The more I think about it, this recipe is more of a lemon shortbread.

Make again? Probably not, just because I know there are better lemon desserts out there. BUT don't be put off by this review, as it was still good to eat.
